GST on restaurant bill in 2026: the rates in short

For most restaurants, the rule is simple. A standalone restaurant, including takeaway, charges 5% GST on food and beverages it serves, whether the dining area is AC or non-AC. At 5%, the restaurant cannot claim input tax credit (ITC) on what it buys. On a normal bill within your state, that 5% shows as CGST 2.5% and SGST 2.5%.

The main exception is a restaurant inside a hotel where any room is priced at ₹7,500 or more per night. The law calls these specified premises, and the rate there is 18% with ITC. Outdoor catering is also 18% with ITC. Alcohol is outside GST and is taxed by the state, so it needs separate treatment on the bill.

Rates and conditions change, and your situation may have details that matter, such as composition registration or a mix of services. Please check your rate and bill format with your CA before you go live. Then set up the software the way your CA advises.

CGST SGST bill format: what a correct restaurant GST invoice shows

A GST invoice for restaurant guests does not need to be complicated, but a few things must be on it. Missing any of them is a common reason owners redo their bill format after a CA review. EETS puts these on every bill automatically once you enter your GSTIN in setup.

  • Your name and GSTIN

The restaurant's name and GST number print at the top of every bill.

  • Bill number and date

Each bill gets its own number and time, with the table or token it belongs to.

  • Items, quantities and amounts

Every dish, how many, and the line amount, so the guest can check it.

  • CGST and SGST shown separately

The tax is split into its central and state parts, not lumped into one line.

  • Round-off and total

The total is rounded to the rupee with the round-off shown, so cash and UPI match the bill.

How the 5% splits on a real bill

Here is a dinner from our own restaurant. Two masala dosa at ₹120 make ₹240, and four filter coffees at ₹45 make ₹180. The sub-total is ₹420. At 5%, GST is ₹21: CGST 2.5% is ₹10.50 and SGST 2.5% is ₹10.50. The guest pays ₹441.

If your menu prices already include tax, the maths runs the other way. A dish priced at ₹105 including 5% GST has a base value of ₹100 and tax of ₹5, split ₹2.50 and ₹2.50. Many restaurants prefer tax-inclusive prices because the guest sees exactly what they will pay. EETS supports prices with or without tax, so you can choose either style and the bill shows the split correctly.

What GST billing software for restaurants should do for you

The cashier should not be thinking about tax at all. With a good GST billing app, the rate lives in the setup, and every bill follows it. EETS takes three taps from order to a GST bill, and the same bill can carry discounts, complimentary items, tips and split payments across cash, card and UPI.

For payment, EETS shows a UPI QR for the exact bill total. The money goes straight to your own account and never passes through us. Print the bill on a 58 mm or 80 mm Bluetooth printer or an Android POS machine, or send it as a small PDF on WhatsApp.

  • Tax reports for your CA

Sales, tax, item and staff reports as small PDFs you can share on WhatsApp.

  • Bills that cannot quietly vanish

Reprints, removed items and discounts go into a log nobody can edit or delete.

  • Billing without internet

Bills save on the device first and sync later, so the GST record is never lost to an outage.

What our GST billing app does not do yet

Some restaurant businesses need more than GST bills. EETS does not have e-invoicing (IRN) integration and does not connect to Tally. If your turnover requires e-invoicing, or your accountant works only from Tally imports, plan for that with your CA before choosing any GST billing software for restaurants. For most standalone restaurants, the bill, the tax report PDFs and the day close are what the CA asks for, and EETS covers those.

Questions

Questions owners ask

What is the GST rate on restaurant food in 2026?

For a standalone restaurant, including takeaway and whether AC or non-AC, the rate is 5% without input tax credit, shown as CGST 2.5% and SGST 2.5%. Restaurants in hotels with any room tariff of ₹7,500 or more per night charge 18% with ITC. Outdoor catering is 18% with ITC. Check your own case with your CA.

Is GST 5% or 18% on a restaurant bill?

Most restaurant bills carry 5%. The 18% rate applies mainly to restaurants inside specified premises, meaning hotels where a room is priced at ₹7,500 or more per night, and to outdoor catering. An AC dining room alone does not move a standalone restaurant to 18%. Your CA can confirm which applies to you.

Can a restaurant claim input tax credit at 5% GST?

No. The 5% rate for restaurant service comes without input tax credit, so GST you pay on purchases cannot be set off against the GST on your bills. Restaurants charging 18% in specified premises can claim ITC. Because this changes your costs, it is worth confirming your position with your CA.

How do I show CGST and SGST on a restaurant bill?

Show the sub-total, then CGST and SGST on separate lines, each at half the total rate. At 5%, that is 2.5% each. On a ₹420 sub-total, CGST and SGST are ₹10.50 each, making ₹441. EETS prints this split on every bill automatically once your GSTIN is set.

Is GST charged on alcohol in restaurants?

Alcohol for human consumption is outside GST and is taxed by the state, usually through VAT. Food and soft drinks on the same bill still attract GST. Because the treatment depends on your state, ask your CA how to show liquor and food together on one bill before you start billing.

Does EETS support e-invoicing for restaurants?

Not yet. EETS Partner does not have e-invoicing (IRN) or Tally integration. It makes GST bills with your GSTIN, the CGST and SGST split and round-off, and produces tax reports as PDFs. If your business is required to generate e-invoices, discuss that with your CA before choosing software.

Can I print a GST bill from a mobile phone?

Yes. EETS Partner makes the GST bill on an Android phone or tablet and prints it on any ESC/POS Bluetooth thermal printer with 58 mm or 80 mm paper, or on an Android POS machine that prints through Bluetooth. If the guest prefers, share the same bill as a small PDF on WhatsApp instead of paper.
